Holy Orders

Holy Orders

Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to his Apostles continues to be exercised in the church. It includes three degrees: diaconate, presbyterate and episcopate.

Episcopal consecration of a bishop confers the offices of sanctifying, teaching and ruling.

Priests are consecrated to preach the Gospel and to shepherd the faithful, as well as to celebrate the divine liturgy and the other sacraments. They pastor parishes, visit the sick, teach, visit schools, and assist people in all walks of life as instruments of God’s presence and healing.

Deacons share in Christ’s mission and grace. Among other tasks, deacons assist the bishop and priests in the celebration of the divine mysteries, and in dedicating themselves to the various ministries of charity.

Is God calling you to a life of service to his Church as a priest or deacon? For more information about these and all vocations, see the Vocations section of the Diocesan website here

Consecrated Life

Though not a sacrament, many follow Jesus wholeheartedly by consecrating their whole lives to him by bonds of poverty, chastity, and obedience. These forms of consecrated life enrich our church and even our parishes. For many years, St. Mary’s was staffed by Capuchin Franciscan priests.

At present, Sunday worship in our parishes is frequently enriched by the attendance of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill (www.scsh.org) and the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (www.ascjus.org).

In addition, two sons of the parish are studying for the priesthood in consecrated life: Ricky Bevington with the Congregation of Holy Cross (www.holycrossusa.org) and Stephen Wetzel with the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (www.fssp.org).
